Beware of tax refund scam

The government has warned taxpayers to be wary of scams that commonly appear around tax time.

A common scam email seen around tax time state that a taxpayer is eligible for a tax refund in order to trick people into sharing their personal information or to download malware. The email has the subject line “Important information regarding your account” and includes the myGov logo, claiming to be from the myGov team. Instead, the email is a phishing scam designed to steal personal and financial information. Taxpayers are reminded that the ATO and myGov will never send an email or SMS asking to click on a link and provide login, personal or financial information, download a file or open an attachment.
